Each Christmas we profile and financially support a local and a global Upton Vale partner for our Christmas Appeal. This year we are supporting:
-
Unleashed Theatre Company who work with the homeless and recovery communities in Torquay. They are a completely inclusive organisation, where the emphasis is for community theatre to make a positive difference, for the audience as well as those taking part on and off the stage. In 2022, Unleashed purchased the Merlin Cinema on Abbey Road, to build a community Hub and Arts Centre in the middle of Torquay. As a cinema the building was not well maintained and so Unleased are having to bring it back to a useable building, bit by bit. Work will soon start on repairing one third of a leaky roof and putting in a kitchen to enhance their provision. Behind the façade there are many repairs which need to be made to enable groups to run in the building. Monies raised through the Christmas Appeal will therefore be used to enable the safe running of the groups on a day by day basis where funds are tight. In November 2024, Unleashed were awarded ‘The King’s Award’ for voluntary service, which recognises the huge effort put in by all of its supporters.
-
Open Doors who serve persecuted Christians around the world by providing vital support, delivering resources, and providing training. Open Doors will use our donation in several ways: to print and distribute Bibles, Children's Bibles and new testaments to Turkic speaking countries; distributing micro SD cards on which there are Bible passages, the Jesus film, Christian songs and sermons. Open Doors are also developing a Children's Bible App (creation and translation). There are more than 200 million people who speak a Turkic language, Christian witness is very limited as are Bible resources in those languages.
Any donations given over the Christmas period, which are marked 'Christmas Appeal', will be split equally between Unleashed Theatre Company and Open Doors.
You can support our Christmas Appeal in the following ways:
