How can we help Ukraine and in particular refugees that are still fleeing the invasion of their country by Russia in February 2022?
1. By providing sanctuary for refugees through the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme.
Three families at UV have hosted Ukrainian refugees here in Torbay since June 2022. Families continue to arrive more than two years on. Others have had to return to Ukraine for family reasons or just because of a lack of suitable rental accommodation here in Torbay. If you have one or two spare rooms in your home and you feel that the Lord is asking you to help, please contact the
Church Office who would be happy to link you with one of these families who can provide more information and assistance. Maybe you don’t have spare room in your home but are still keen to help.
2. Join the Upton Vale Ukraine Support Group on WhatsApp to find out how we as a church are currently helping and working with other groups in the Torbay community.
-
Assistance with form filling and official letter writing and in some cases help to understand what is being said at meetings, for example with school teachers, about Universal Credit and the new e-visas.
-
Offer to provide some English language coaching for those Ukrainians who are living on their own.
-
Transport to events: Ukrainians often need help to get to social events, language lessons, hospital appointments and clubs during the week.
3. Giving Financially
Our Global Outreach Team have already distributed considerable sums of money from the UV emergency budget and the Ukraine Relief fund to which many members have contributed very generously.
-
TEN-UK, an existing partner working with churches in Moldova and Romania, has already sent emergency funds to these churches (£2,500).
-
BMS, another existing partner, working with the European Baptist Federation who are supporting member Baptist Union's in Poland and other front-line countries to help refugees and sending relief supplies into Ukraine (£4,900).
-
The Red Cross has vast experience in helping civilian populations trapped by war and with refugees (£1,200).
-
Ukraine Torbay Support CIC are helping with an English language course which started in September for 35 Ukrainian refugees (£1,100).
We are also working with
Torbay Council, other churches and organisations providing encouragement and support to Ukrainian refugees.
