Harvest Appeal 2021
For our Harvest Appeal this year we are asking for financial gifts for Torbay Winter Night Shelter (ToWNS) and the Tearfund Afghanistan Crisis Appeal. Any gifts will be split equally between these two organisations. For a number of years, we have supported our local food banks. We’ve been advised that most of them are full – such wonderful news of local people’s generosity. The Torbay Food Alliance are still grateful however to receive food donations at this time and will share them with some smaller food banks in the Bay.
ToWNS have been preparing meals for our homeless community out of the Upton Vale kitchen each Friday and distributing these meals at St Mary Mags across the road. The funding which the council provided for this service is coming to an end, however, the need continues. We hope the additional funding, raised through our Harvest appeal, will help provide some more meals for those who find themselves living on the streets.
Another much larger community who find themselves displaced are the people of Afghanistan who are feeling the uncertainty of regime change in their nation at this time. Recent conflict has reportedly forced around 550,000 people from their homes. Many people have remained in Afghanistan, while others have fled to neighbouring countries, having run for their lives with little more than the clothes on their backs.
Tearfund’s local partners are on the ground and have provided life-saving relief packages to those in need. The packs include food and vital hygiene supplies such as soap and face masks. They are also offering trauma support to people who have been affected by the horrific violence. Afghanistan is also experiencing its worst drought in decades, meaning food and water supplies are limited. And the coronavirus pandemic means that hospitals are already overstretched.
