Staff and Elders

RICH WEBB - Senior Pastor

After a degree in Engineering and a short career in banking, Rich trained for ministry at Spurgeons College.  After 11 years in Scunthorpe, Rich and his wife Alex moved to Upton Vale in the summer of 2015.  During his time in Scunthorpe Rich was involved in wider ministry, including serving as the Moderator of the Board of Directors of the EMBA and hosting Willow Creeks' Global Leadership Summit.  He is currently the Moderator of the Baptist Union board of Trustees.  He loves the great outdoors as well as gadgets, technology and anything with an engine.

JOEL WARD – Youth Pastor

Our Youth Pastor, Joel, has been in full-time Youth Ministry since 2001 and studied at Oasis Trust/Spurgeons College for a BA (Hons) degree in youth work and ministry.  His work has involved running youth clubs, music projects and mission, social action and evangelistic initiatives and he loves seeing young people empowered through mission, service and music. He believes the key to a Church engaging successfully with young people is an approach which combines inspiration to follow Jesus, encounter with Jesus and empowerment to act for Jesus, so that young people can, in turn, inspire others with the awesome impact of the presence of Christ in their lives.

ELE HINE – Families’ Worker

Ele is the Families' Worker at Upton Vale and finds it a great opportunity to tell people about Jesus who don't normally go to church, through the outreach events and courses which go on here.

She describes life as not always being easy, but that's why she cannot imagine how anyone can live without Jesus as their Lord and Saviour!

PAUL HINE– Children’s Worker

Paul is our Children’s Worker here at Upton Vale. Since getting married to Ele, as a couple and later, as a family, they have been very involved in church work and life, helping run various youth work and children’s groups.

ANNETTE HARPHAM – Celebration Team Leader

Annette heads up the team of worship leaders, musicians and singers who help to bring our Sunday celebrations to life.      She’s responsible for organising and encouraging the musicians, developing their practical skills and arranging music, while  working alongside our technical team and contributing to the development of music and worship in the church.  A keyboard  and trombone player, Annette has been involved in church worship since a teenager.  In addition to her musical experience,  she holds qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and Chartered Management Institute.  She’s married with  two young children.

JUDITH BAKER – Office and Premises Manager

Judith manages the Church Office team and ensures the smooth running of the building, whether it’s for our own groups or external groups who hire our premises. She’s part of our Fabric/Premises and Technical Action Teams. She works in the Church Office from Mondays to Thursdays.

Judith is married to Neil.

SUE MALONEY– Administration Officer

Sue supervises the Church Office team which provides administration support to all of our ministry groups. Sue works in the Church Office on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Sue is married to John and they have three boys.

MAT MILLER– Caretaker

Mat is our Caretaker and responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of the building. Mat works alongside our Fabric/Premises Action Team to carry out maintenance and improvements so that our facilities are kept to a high standard for the people using them.

Martin has worked in the Operating Theatres at Torbay Hospital for 28+ years as an Operating Department Practitioner where he assists the Anaesthetists.

He has been involved in service at UV for many years including roles such as Deacon and Prayer Co-ordinator.  His passions are prayer, and unity, from a large church to its small groups.

Andrew is a consultant at Torbay Hospital where he works with teams helping them with their systems, reducing waiting and improving the quality and safety of healthcare.  Andrew describes himself as ‘quick to listen and slow to speak’ and longs for the local church to be known by people as the place to get answers to their problems.

Wendy is involved with the community of the church including Pastoral Council, Welcome Team, Belonging, Area Pastors, Monday Lunches, Cameo, Just for Women and the Flower team.  Her background in education, and in particular the pastoral side of team building and caring for teachers and pupils alike, has given her the skills required to work in the area of pastoral care.

An active member of the Music Ministry team (he plays a mean trombone!), David has also served as Worship Leader as well as a House Group leader, a Deacon and an Elder!

David served in the Welsh Guards in Chelsea Barracks for a number of years.  He and his wife, Beverley, moved back to south Devon (local boy!) where David set up his own business.

Becky is a Practice Nurse in a busy local surgery and has been coming to Upton Vale for 14 years. During this time she has served in various ways in the children’s and youth work. She had a sense that God wanted to do a “new thing” (Isaiah 43: 19) and that He was asking her to step out in faith, be strong and courageous and allow Him to work in her to do things that she couldn’t do in her own strength.

Sally has been part of the Finance Team and Chair of Human Resources Action Team for a number of years. Sally is also Chair to the Church Leadership Team.

She has a lot of experience and expertise in dealing with finance and human resources but is also someone who welcomes on the door and helps on the coffee rota!
